5 Reasons Tim Hortons Sucks

For those of you unaware, Tim Hortons is an international1 coffee & donut shop co-founded by Tim Horton, a Canadian Hockey player (who died when he lost control of his 1974 Pantera at 100mph, while under the influence of alcohol and pain killers). By feeding off it’s inherently Canadian origins, combined with massive expansion, clever marketing and sponsorships Tim Hortons has managed to inject itself as key part of Canadiana – up there with Hockey Night In Canada, curling, cheap beer and The CBC.

Tim Hortons has done such an excellent job marketing their “Canadian-ness,” that many Canadians literally feel that it’s their patriotic duty to patronize the restaurant.

I am not one of those Canadians. Tim Hortons sucks!

1. Tim Hortons coffee is terrible!

A lot of Canadians hold Tim Hortons coffee in high esteem, “it’s great, like Canadian beer”. Most Canadians are probably only familiar with the “double-double” (2 shots of cream and 2 sugars). But really, almost any black coloured beverage would taste pretty OK with that much cream and sugar. I prefer my coffee black. I’ve tried to drink Tim Hortons coffee without cream or sugar, it’s completely unbearable. It actually tastes like the unbrewed grounds are just suspended in hot water.

As far as I understand, when a coffee actually tastes better with cream and sugar it indicates a cheaper bean. But, the Tim Hortons double-double has such a distinct taste, I think they’re actually trying to achieve a specific flavour profile that only works with cream and sugar. It does not taste like your standard cheap coffee bean + cream + sugar. It doesn’t exactly taste any better or worse really, just different, almost unnatural. I think this is how they convince the masses that such a poor quality product is actually “good.”

Tim Hortons’ recent foray into espresso based beverages has had even more terrifying results. My advice: just stay away.

2. Their food is hardly “always fresh”

For at least the past 15 – 20 years, Tim Hortons has used the slogan “Always Fresh.” Originally – back in the days when they were competing with mom & pop’s and truck stops – it was a guarantee that their coffee was never allowed to sit for more than 20 minutes. I’ve personally witnessed customers being served coffee older than 20 minutes, but that’s beside the point. The only thing worse than Tim Hortons coffee is Tim Hortons coffee that’s been sitting around for 30 minutes, no amount of cream and sugar can fix that.

Lately, the slogan is also being used to imply that their baked goods and food products are also always fresh. Nothing could be future from the truth. Fact is, as of 2001, Tim Hortons actually par-bakes their product in a central location in Brantford, Ontario2. Where they are then frozen and shipped to Tim Hortons stores across the world. Once they reach the store, the final touches – like fillings, sprinkles, etc – are added and the goods are baked in a highly visible oven, giving customers the impression that they’ve been make from scratch in store.

By Tim Hortons’ definition the frozen pizza I had for supper was also fresh!

The small stand-alone locations in airports, hospitals, etc are even worse. They don’t even usually contain the equipment to do the finish baking, so they have to import the products from other Tim Hortons stores.

As for their actual food – soups, sandwiches, etc – these are no more fresh than anything you would expect at any other fast food restaurant.

3. Tim Hortons is not Canadian owned

As of August 8th, 1995, Tim Hortons has been owned by the US-based Wendy’s3.

That means, buying Tim Hortons is no more Canadian than any other franchised restaurant.

As an interesting aside, the company that does the par-baking for Tim Hortons is a Irish subsidiary of a Swiss multinational4.

4. Inefficient Service

Tim Hortons seems to have a complete and utter lack of knowledge when it comes to food service efficiency. The main problem would seem to be the lack of a standard fast food assembly-line type process, combined with poor/non-standarized store layout.

Never having been an employee of Tim Hortons, I don’t know what their manul dictates. But, these observations appear to be standard partices:

  • When you place an order, the same employee (“Cashier”) that enters your order and takes your money, is also responsable for preparing your order and handing it to you.
  • If you’re only ordering a coffee and a donut this generally works fine – donuts and coffee makers are generally within arms reach of the cash register. Service is fairly quick.
  • If the coffee maker runs out, the Cashier is responsible for refilling the beans – before bringing you your order! This obviously slows down the entire queue.
  • If your order includes anything other than a coffee and a donut – like a soft drink, specialty coffee beverage, bagel, “meal,” etc, the system completely breaks down! These items are generally not within arms reach of the front counter. While the bagels and sandwiches do have dedicated crew members, the preparation stations are often in inefficient locations (depending on store layout) causing the receiving process to be somewhat awkward. Either the cashier will bring these items to you, or you are expected to wait in a cafeteria style line, or you simply wait off to the side. It’s near chaos.
  • The specialty coffee beverages (iced caps, iced mochas, lattes, etc) are made by the cashier. Depending on the drink, this involves 3 to 5 steps, including stiring by hand! These stations are typically not located near the front counter. It’s not uncommon for a Cashier to take a minute or two to make these drinks.
  • During peak times, when a cashier is busy compiling a customer’s order, another employee will take the cashier’s place and begin on the next customer’s order. Depending on the layout of the store and the number of employees, this can sometimes delay the simpler coffee & donut orders by causing bottlenecks around the coffee stations.

I’m not an expert on fast food restaurant efficiency. It just seems to me that Tim Hortons is one of the most inefficient fast food operations. They need to re-organize the way they handle and deliver orders.

5. Cups Are Not Recyclable5

Tim Hortons uses a wax lined cup that is only recyclable in 3 small Canadian Cities: Moncton, NB; Windsor, ON; and Owen Sound, ON6. Also, Tim Hortons cups do not contain any recycled materials.

Tim Hortons may or may not be the only chain in Canada that uses this type of cup. But they are particularly bad for 2 reasons. 1) Their annual RRRRRoll Up The Rim contest. For those of you non-Canadians, this contest involves a prize being printed on the inside of the paper cup’s rolled up rim. While the contest is running, customer “eating-in” who would normally have their coffee poured into a reusable ceramic mug are given an additional contest cup. 2) “Double-cupping” seems to be a fairly common practice at Tim Hortons across the country. This is when the Tim Hortons employee will put an additional paper cup around the first cup to insulate your hand from the hot beverage. Apparently the concept of a paper sleeve has not caught on with the Tim Hortons Brass.

Recycling and environmentalism is a way of life for many Canadians. It’s completely unacceptable for such a “Canadian” company to have such irresonsable practices.

In conclusion, Tim Hortons is anti-Canadian!!7

  5. This blog post goes into great detail: www.buzzbishop.com/blog/2008/02/25/rrroll-up-the-un-recyclable-rim/, Tim Hortons own FAQ also concedes the fact, but tries to put a positive spin on it, stating that they are working to get more recyling plants built – rather than actually doing something on their end! www.timhortons.com/en/about/faq.html
  6. Tim Hortons helped build this recycling plant!!! (see their FAQ linked above)
  7. That said, I don’t really feel that any of these points are reasons NOT to visit Tim Hortons. I just feel like Canadians need to understand that Tim Hortons is not all that great and there’s definitely nothing Canadian about it. A lot of people I know enjoy going to Tim Horton and I will continue to join them, I just choose not to visit when the choice is mine.

  1. Tim's has become a huge company that has destroyed all of it's competition. Here in Winnipeg, we witnessed the destruction of; Robins Donuts, Coffee Time, and Country Style. At one time, Robin's was equal to Tim's, but they fell asleep and basically got obliterated.

Tim's is not the best coffee, but, like McDonald's, they have strong marketing and brand identification. They've also managed to secure great locations in every major city in Canada…not a bad strategy!

Their enormous success has scared off competitors. The only other major direct competitor is US based, Dunkin Donuts. Even they wouldn't take on Tims's up here…..never mind, they're busy fighting off Tim's down there. From recent reports; Tim's is having trouble converting Americans into Tim Zombies.

Tim's is what it is. Relatively quick, convenient (because they're everywhere), and…competition is limited or in most cases, non-existent.

In closing – the best coffee I ever had at an outlet, was at the Tropicana Casino in Vegas at a place called Java Java. The beans were ground right in front of you when you ordered……now that's fresh!

  2. Well, Tom, aren't you a piece of work? Thanks for leaving the employees alone. I'm wouldn't want to read what you had to write if you decided to attack them.
The people who work at my local Tim Horton's are hard working “women” for the most part, supplementing the family income. And a number of them are retired from very productive lives. One is a former social worker, one a retired financial planner, another a laid off auto worker— and I could go on and on. None of them need to go to the library to complete a GED. These people work hard under very trying circumstances, faulty equipment, chronic understaffing etc. You would be doing them a favor by directing your complaints to the Tim Horton's corporation.
Perhaps if you took the time to get to know the employees, you would be a little kinder.
But then you are probably the guy in line in front of me who is impatient, rude, and who would never consider lowering himself to the level of actually looking at the woman making his coffee and realizing that she is a human being worthy of respect, She has a life outside of Tim Horton's and appreciates a sincere “How are you?” just like the rest of us. Try making eye contact and smiling. You might be amazed at the results.

  3. haha, that is laughable. Not one of the employees at the Tim Horton's I work at was trained. We have no handbook, no job descriptions, and no policy manual. We had to learn as we went and managers say, “oh, buy the way, this is your job too”. Tim Horton's is horrible and I can not wait to get out of the slave labor that that push on us.

  4. I work at one in Ohio, and it is terrible. So are the other 4 that our owners have. Nothing is effcient and nothing is fresh! The one that the co owner runs needs a shovel to get though the filth on the floor. They never clean anything and use the same pans over and over. They also do not clean out their dishwasher. Tim Horton's is a terrible company and I can not wait to get out. We are treated like slave labor. Everytime we bring something up to management, they cut our hours.

This article is a couple of years old. As of 2009 they are Canadian again (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Hortons#Repatr…). So that part of my post is no longer relevant.

  9. Go check out the site http://www.thetdlgroupltd.com and see what this company is all about. A company that operates in this fashion will no longer have my business. I will never spend another dime at Tim Hortons after reading this site. A group of former and current franchisees are gathering to make this story public. They already have the name of the company that operates Tim Hortons and they have another site at http://www.timhortonslies.wordpress.com

    1. This is hilarious…obviously created by a deadbeat franchisee who Tim’s got rid of. His problem for not reading the agreement before signing. I doubt you see many Franchisees handing back stores. And sure some don’t make money….risk of doing business!

My girlfriend and I are HUGE Tim Horton's fans in Toronto. Been drinking it for years. But one day on a whim, I tried a coffee house called 'Jet Fuel'. LOVED IT !! Then tried 'Bisogno' espresso bar, & later 'Dark Horse' espresso bar. Great also, to varying degrees. One constant ..they ALL DESTROYED Horton's in taste !! Made me wonder …. (1) Why does my girlfriend's stomach get upset when she has Horton's, but NOT with these other 3 supposed stronger coffee places?? ….. (2) Why does left-over coffee from these independent coffee houses smell “OK” the next morning, but left-over Horton's coffee smells like “ASS” ?? I have since concluded that Horton's is NOT “real” coffee in the conventional sense …. it's some sort of cheap synthetic brew. Lord only knows what process they use to make it, it can't be all that healthy. I bet if many hardcore Horton's drinkers tried these little independent coffee houses, they'd realize as I did how inferior Horton's is. My bar is now set VERY HIGH, and Horton's is now a only a last resort when I can't find an indie coffee house.

you can drink all the coffee you want but just remember that this corporation got there on the backs of hard earned monies of franchisees who lost everything and had to sign a confidentially agreement so they do not reveal any information to the public about what has really happend to these families. get the truth out about what goes on.

  16. their coffee sucks. Dunkin donuts all the way.

  17. I work at Time Hortons and I agree with some of the stuff. Except they are very strict with throwing out coffee before 20 mins, I do that all the time and it is super fucking annoying but I still have to do it cuz its my job. No the baker bakes things in the back not in the front at least at my store and the ones in my area. There than a few of those things it completely depends on your area because as they do have standards for all stores, they aren't enforced as well as I think they should be at some stores. I also agree with the efficiency, it needs to be completly built from the ground up again because I hate having to take an order and then make the coffee and get the donuts or whatever, and the worst part is that I have to because my manager won;t let anyone help me at my cash, they have to go to the other cash and customers always yell at me and it gets frustrating and I hate that so very much there is no need of it.

  18. Sky I work at Time Hortons and I agree is definitely isn't the best place but althought the baked stuff is brought in frozen it is all fresh, the only thing I can think of that isn't always fresh is the soups and chili which can be a couple days old. That wouldn't make sense if nothing was fresh, that would mean the employees sit on their asses all day, I highly doubt that, whenever I can't find anything to do my manger gets so mad. If the owner of the stores in my area walked in and saw me doing nothing I'd get fired and I have seen people get fired.

    1. Definition of “Fresh” from oxford dictionary. Idiot.

  19. I don't beleive you, I work at Time Horton's and I have made mistakes but never like that and never repeated.

  20. HI, I totaly agree with this article, im a student and im working at Tim Hortons right now, for a third summer and everyting in this article is absolutely true. Not only that the food has been frozen for a long time, but its often heated in ovens and euqipments not properly cleaned or used. Sometimes soups can sit there for more than 24 hrs. The only thing not mention in this article is how Tim Hortons treat their employees. We only get two unpaid breaks of 15 mins for a 8hrs shift. We have cash management polocies that make our jobs harder and slower, and basicly consider every single employees has a possible thief. We are aslo obligated to not filled ice capps to the top or we can get fired. When we go on breaks and buy food at half price, were not allowed to prepare it ouselves wich slow down the serving of custumers plus were wasting our breaks. The employess work constantly in an atmosphere of stress and tension which is not healthy for us neither for the custumer service. I dont understand that the company dosent realise that. Its probably that they know they established a monopole and they just dont care about their custumer. Well some of us is now writing to the company to fight for our right as a worker and we encourage every unsatisfied custumers to file a complaint to your store or to the head office. Thank you for your support.

    1. Hey josee I agree with you and missy this job sucks it has no benefits except for getting their frozen food for half off and maybe a free drink. The owners of the Tim Hortons I work at our horrible they don’t pay us enough and give only some people raises, its not right. As well I wasn’t there but supposably the owner of our Tim Hortons came in on a Saturday (busiest day) and I guess some guy went to the bathroom and left a bit of a mess this is what our owner did. He told all the guests waiting in line to order food that he needs to speak to his staff for a minute, he pulled everyone to the back except 2 people on drive thru and got mad at everyone because the bathroom was dirty just cause he walked in after this guy went to the bathroom. And he told everyone working that if it happens again no one gets profit share! BECAUSE OF THE BATHROOM! And he NEVER comes in the store hes just a little rich business man ex hockey player rackin in the money and he tells us we get no profit share! URG I hate him It sucks working for these douches!!

    2. Oh my God you are so right. I know this is two years old and you probably won’t read this, but seriously.. at my store I’m constantly STRESSED OUT. Nobody I work with has a good attitude and we’re always snapping at each other. We don’t work as an effective team. I’m new, and instead of showing me how to make some of the drinks I don’t know how to make, they just yell at me for not knowing how to make them. How is that helping? It’s slowing down the order for the customer, and making me feel like shit.. I hate my job, and I don’t plan on working there very much longer and I will NEVER work at another one again.

    3. I work at A Tim’s…I get paid breaks and our food is free. Just goes to prove all stores are different in how they are run.

I just have a few comments about this article. I do work at Tim Hortons and although I do not agree with some of the management decisions and rules right now if you are going to write an article make sure ALL of your facts are correct. First, we do time our pots, and that is the ONLY way that you would know if it is 20 minutes or more, if you have been in Tim Hortons you know how busy they are. We are not perfect and yes may forget to put the new time on the pot. Actually, at the one I am at the coffee does not have time to age 30 minutes, we are lucky if it lasts 5 minutes. Second, always fresh does NOT mean from scratch. And noone is given the impression that it is from scratch just because it is baked in the oven, if anyone asks we do tell them. Third, Tim Hortons does not have “beans” so I don’t know what you are talking about there. Fourth, I REALLY would like to know which Tim Hortons locations you are talking about, everyone I have worked at or been to there is no issue on the sandwich centre, they always have someone designated to work there for their whole shift. Fifth, I also don’t understand how waiting for your food in a “cafeteria style line” is chaos, like I said earlier if you know Tim Hortons then you know how busy they are. What would you suggest, seeing as you THINK you know all the answers and are obviously a business owner and have a better idea. Sixth, we do NOT make latttes, and honestly, who cares if e are making our own beverages. Normally, there is a buddy system, unless they are understaffed. Seventh, we do not sir the iced caps or iced mochas by hand, We stir coffee, tea iced coffee and things that NEED to be stirred by hand. So, I would suggest that you try and work there for a day and I guarantee you would NOT make it. You seem to think that you can fix that so what are your suggestions? But, like Isaid at the beginning I do not agree with the management practices, and some of the things that are done there. I do enjoy working at Tim Hortons for the most part so yes I do get a little defensive when the wrong facts are stated, but the people who do work there have to deal with a lot and have new rules every day.

DING DONG! hello, dont ask for something, pay for it, have us make it and give it to you, then say I didnt ask for this. Look its right there on the monitor: exactly what you ordered, and what i read back to you before you payed. because i started hating my job, i went onto google and typed in tim hortons sucks. I read this article and man, i couldnt agree with you LESS. right now as i type this, i realize the reason i hate working at timhortons is the customers like the person who wrote this article. It’s true, a small minority of customers are idiots. But the large majority of Tims workers are even worse. There’s a reason why you’re working there and not at a job that takes more skill and ability.

I once ordered a dozen cookies, and had to point to the cookies for the worker to pick out despite repeating myself slowly which cookies I wanted. And then he went on to put them in the dozen donuts box LOL. Like I said, morons.

IF I COULD work somewhere where it was more stressful, im sure I could easily do that, but considering my Mental illness’ prohibit me from working in a stressful/full time position. Maybe you should shut your mouth because you sound like a righteous piece of filth. You are not better than Tim Horton Workers. Its a great place to work, aside from a few management/co-worker Issues. I Love my Customers and they Love me.

          1. First of all, they aren’t your customers, they are Tim Horton’s customers. Tim Horton’s receives the profit and you get minimum wage.
Second, using mental health issues as an excuse to not wan’t to try and succeed in life is a real cop out and I completely disagree. I have struggled with severe depression, anxiety and other issues for years, yet I still managed to finish University while working part time, and now I have a full-time career. I’m sure a full time career would be much less stressful than working in fast food anyway.
Finally, yes school can be expensive, but get a student loan or a line of credit.

Sounds to me like you like to find a lot of excuses. If your content earning minimum wage the rest of your life and having to put up with idiotic customers, then Tim Horton’s sounds like the perfect place for you!

The only reason some older people may end up working at tim hortons, is because unions have bloody well sucked the job market dry, and INSISTED that they sit on their ass all day doing nothing, crying about how they don’t get paid enough doing it, while at the same time expecting to run to tim horton’s order food and coffee, while hard working individuals trying to make ends meet strive to make YOUR sorry ass happy, just so you can complain about the freakin service!!…If you don’t like the service or the food, why would you bother going there?

        5. @barry p – actually dude, you’re just one of those disgusting customers who bash up workers with your impatience and arrogance. I actually work at tim hortons, and prior to what I used to think, they work really hard. not all, but most, and they try to get it right and do it fast too so morons like you don’t have to stand there. uh, yea, that worker you’re bullshi*ting about was probably new and doesn’t prove anything. If Tim Hortons workers at ‘majority’ were bad, then TIM HORTONS WOULD NOT BE AT EVERY CORNER OF THE STREET. It doesn’t run on oxygen. It runs on customers, hundreds, coming daily. I too have worked at a tim horton’s for all of 3 weeks and after 8 years of experience in the customer service industry, I’ve never been so horrified with a company. First of all, the owner at my store would make us use the cups that had fallen on the floor, and serve them to customers just to save a few cents. Secondly, she would make us erase the time on a coffee pot that had expired, and add another 20 minutes until it was empty. There are so many things I could list that are inherently wrong with this company and the way it runs. And the placement of the ovens 100% is there to give the impression of products being made from scratch.
Their coffee is also horribly weak and tastes like cardboard.

      1. Okay woah. My owner would kill us if we did any of the shit your owner made you guys do.

Hi Josee. You are absolutely right about the way they treat us. I posted the message after you but I was a little put off by this persons lack of knowledge about the company though. They seem to think that we are robots and perfect, we do make mistakes. Right now our concern is how badly we are being treated. For the most part I think that our customer service is prety good compared to other places, even though the morale has been diminished by management.

Maybe its the Americans who don’t know how to run a Timmies 😉
    …and yes, that’s its nickname 😉

  24. completely agree. I also drink my coffee unpolluted and Tim’s is undrinkable. and having worked for them 8 years ago, I can tell you it’s not because it sits. it tastes burnt the second it’s brewed.

you want donuts, fine, whatever. not particularly good (used to be a bakery in town that made chocolate glazed donuts that were actually *good*.. opens our eyes) but it’s sweet junk food

I’ve had soups and sandwiches and they were OK. those breakfast biscuits are disgusting though. ugh.

I especially despise the way they’ve monopolized the market in certain areas (including mine, grrr) to the point that no decent coffee shops survive. annoying as h***

  25. Hah, that’s true. Never thought about that before.. Hmm..

  26. What will happen with loan deposit?
Basically I considered taking out a loan via two companies to pay for my new vehicle. I was told I had been accepted and only needed to pay a 50 deposit for one and 79 for the other, so I paid and later was told for some reason they could not give me alone happened with both companies one after another. So I requested a refund on deposit and put in writting, a month later nothing given or no response… So I phoned to be told I was not on there system?! I then took this further to the financial ombudsmen service who filled a complaint, they have 8 weeks to respond and a month has passed with still no deposit paid back or response, my question is what will happen if they don’t pay after the 8 weeks? Loan companies are wentworth loans and no worries loans. Thanks for advice

I purchase a large double double 3 times a day. the service is excellent in these stores. always service with a smile coffee is always fresh. but what big companies arent american now adays? every company is run by americans so what does it matter?

  29. Tim Horton’s coffee is terrible and the doughtnuts are tasteless. You might as well eat sugar.

  30. I purchased a Timmie mug so I wouldn’t have to waste a cup everytime I go. The first time I take the mug in, the cashier filled up a standard cup and then filled up the mug. Stay Green Timmie!

    1. Avatar

      This is absolutely incredible.

    2.  I work at tims, and this is what we are supposed to do, but I always just fill it straight into he mug. And you know what we have to do with that standard cup after? We RINSE IT OUT AND USE IT FOR SOMEONE ELSES ORDER!!! DISGUSTING!! I can’t wait to leave this vile workplace!

They cant put your cream and sugar in your green mug and then stur the coffee in. The spoon they would stur your already used mug in would then be considered unsanitary, so it must first be sturred in a cup and then put in your mug. The cup that they sturred your drink in can and should be used for the next order of that size of coffee.

  31. Over the last year or two I’ve become a bit of a coffee geek. I usually refer to the double-double (which is all I can bear) as “candied coffee”. One time I tried it black; lets just say that coffee went promptly in the trash.

well. i guess they just plain sucks hard. cheers!

  33. Obviously you people who take the time to research Tim Hortons this thoroughly don’t have real freaking jobs and have too much time on your hands. For the record before you jump to conclusions, NO, I DO NOT DRINK THE STUFF!! I still think you should find a job and stop patronizing the business community. You can preach all you want about whether or not it is Canadian. Take a good look at everything you buy, eat and drink and tell me everything is Canadian. Stop being hippocrits. Nobody is putting a gun to your head to make you stop at Tim Hortons and we all make our own choices.

I worked for Tim Horton’s for over fifteen years in Columbus Ohio, building new stores. The food is all mass produced in a canadian warehouse and is shipped to each store frozen solid! It’s discraceful. This chain has gone down hill since Wendy’s spun them off in the late ’90’s. JH

I used to work at a Tim Hortons here in the US and let me tell you something, we never changed out the coffee every 20 minutes, it was more like when ever we felt like it unless we had an ‘always fresh’ inspection! Even then we would write the wrong times on the coffee pots just to make the man doing the inspection to think that we were folloing the rules! Tim Hortons is a horriable company to work for! They treat their employees like shit! We were highly understaffed and the staff we did have was nothing but dumbass teenage hormonally imbalanced girls. I worked all 3 shifts during my 8 month stay at Tim Hortons. The management was a joke and so was the owner. He was a cheapass fink who never gave people fulltime hours. You are worked to the bone and whatever you do do is never good enough. Oftentimes my bosses would show up to work drunk or hungover. I’m not saying all Timmies are like this but from what I gather from other responces I’m not far off. The layout of the store and it’s functionality is a joke! We were one of the stores in the US to get the new store layout and it was an utter nightmare! Corporate was always coming in and rebuilding certain aspects of the store to try and fix the flow problems, but everytime they did we had to either shut down or close early which always resulted in pissing our customers off. Plus we always had to work around the construction crew and explain to our customers over and over again why we were closed and working out of a goddamned trailer the size of a closet. Tim Hortons is very much in need of an overhaul! As far as the fresh baked goods, everything came in either cold or frozen and we warmed it up and then dressed it up. Bread, donuts, bagels, and danishes were all premake somewhere else and shipped to us. It is hardly fresh! It’s all frozen cardboard and the only reason anything tastes good at Tim Hortons is that everything is loaded with sugar! Even their plain Black coffee has 9grams of naturally occurring sugar per 8oz serving! I made donuts on 3rd shift I also worked morning and evening shifts! So if you want fresh food than don’t get it at Tim Hortons you won’t find it there. I will admit the whole time I was there I ate the shit out of the food. I will say this much no matter where you work you will eventually eat the food that they have. One last thing I must mention, I have worked in the food service industry for 10 years and I have never worked for a more disorganized and slave driving company like Tim Hortons!!!!!! They pay you shit and only give you like 16 hours a week! Plus if you make a mistake they cut your hours! The guy I worked for treated his employees like shit! And he was just a fat assed bald motherfucking canuk! Screw canuks and their self rightous donut weed smoking dumbasses! If ya all don’t want that stereotype than don’t come to the US and send dumbass slave driving asses to work here to open up Tim Hortons! I hope Mcdonalds runs you out of business! At least they have done something right! Over 99 billion served bitches!

  38. i use to work there, and trust me, i saw people coming there because its only a canadian symbol and they want a show they are part of this country so they will buy coffe and donuts, the cup are not recyclable.my team is composed from teanager who dont give a dam care . and customer are so hard to serve. thats why i quit, this the worst job i ever had, and in the top i was paid la shiity.

    1. Avatar

Yes. As you can see by the timestamp it is over 2 years old. A lot of the other points still apply though.

  40. Yes I have to agree with you, but you failed to mention how terrible thier doughnuts are. They are just loaded with pure white sugar and are so sweet they make you sick. I don’t know how so many canadians fall for thier patriotic styled commercials where they use hockey as thier way into peoples hearts. I live in rural ontario and I’m sick of seeing thier cups in the ditches along the roads. Trying to show that they are an integral part of canadian life makes me sick. I guess I’m just not a patriotic canadian then.

    1. Avatar

You’re right. I wrote this post over 2 years ago and I really think their donuts have gone down hill considerably since then.

  41. Tim Hortons gives free wifi but intercepts what you view and decides for you the

is the difference to them? I guess nothing IS free.

This is all completely true. I currently work at Tim Hortons, as a baker, and can vouche for all of this. In fact, Always Fresh is the biggest lie there is. We actually get in trouble for throwing out old coffee at our store. Then, when there is an “Always Fresh” (A review on how fresh the items are) we are told to put fake labels on everything. It’s rediculous. If I was still a front employee, I would have quit for I feel wrong lying to customers. I hope they get sued for old coffee because it is clearly a lie. The donuts are pre-cooked and not fresh, and you also can not throw those out. I do most of the time, but then they just say make less. To make them happy, you have to sell every donut you make. And at my store, they are so happy they have cut back on labor costs… Well, that means that for many evenings, there are only TWO employees running everything (minus baking). I am many times called out front and then get in trouble for not finishing everything in the back. I also had to threaten to leave to get a raise, even though I am a really good employee (they’ve told me this). Maybe some restaurants are good, but not mine…

  45. You DO realize Wendy’s was forced to spin off Tim Hortons because it was more successful than their business, right?

We do make better products here in Canada than u.s. He would not know a good cup of coffee if his life depended on it. I hope this is the only thing that your critical of, but I have my doubts about that one.

You lost all credibility when you said starbucks coffee is terrible and implying Tims serves good coffee. You could put almost any coffee bar – which means no coffee & donut shops – in the place of starbucks, Tims still serves one of the most watered down cups of coffee, using poor quality beans to start with. I feel sorry for your taste buds, must be shot to hell.

    Hi There!
I currently work at a small Tim Horton’s in Ontario, Canada, and I Can both agree and disagree with a lot of what has been said, though I am in no way implying that your opinion is wrong, as no opinion is wrong. I have only worked there for 2 months, and was hired on for the night shift. In terms of the food being “Always Fresh”, it would depend on your definition of the phrase (which I know, I am already not making my point sound very valid). Any baked product is indeed baked in another location, and we more or less heat it up, or complete the baking process. By “Always Fresh” I believe they are really saying, “We won’t have these baked items out for more than 12 hours (or less depending on the product), after they have come out of OUR ovens”. I completely agree that the service could be made much more efficient, but that also is dependent on the particular store owner, and whether or not he/she wants to spend the money, and re-format and upgrade the store every few years, as Tim Horton’s Head Office implies. I for one can snap about the fact I need take orders, do the cash, make coffee, and make any sandwich/bagel order, all on my own between the hours of 5-6:30, since the management there doesn’t want to bother paying someone for an extra hour of work to make service more efficient. As for the time on the pots, we try our best but at slow times, the coffee very well may be 30 minutes old, as opposed to 20. As a heavy consumer of their coffee while I work there, I don’t honestly see a difference. I’ve even left a pot (off to the side mind you), for an hour and noticed no difference, and I drink my coffee black as well. Everything else I would have to say, Missy 62 already did for me.

Ya, Tim Horton’s can suck, Working there and being a consumer, but does McDonald’s not suck from time to time as well. (Not picking on McDonald’s, Junior Chicken’s Rock!)

  48. YES! This article is awesome! I am Canadian an totally agree that Tim Hortons sucks. Just by looking at their food you can tell that its not fresh! I don’t get how or why people can purchase any food or beverage from there. And they should seriously change their saying “Always Fresh” since it does not portray in any way what they are!

    Thanks for writing this article!

I don’t know how many exceptions there are to this rule, but I find that Tim Hortons means waiting in line for a half hour for a 30% chance they might get my order right!

I mean… tea and a muffin. Is that hard? Very – sometimes I get green tea in a bag when I ask for steeped. Sometimes I get the wrong number of muffins. Sometimes the wrong kind. I’ve had them ask me straight-faced if I wanted to buy a breakfast sandwich for full price with no egg… The one thing they have going for them is that it’s cheap, but mediocre products with crap service and ridiculous waits. It’s just not worth it.
