In this week’s episode of Canadian Tech Roundup I touched on the fact that mint.com has not done one bit of Canadian localization. I’m really disappointed that we had to wait 4 years for a Canadian version of the product, only to receive something that hasn’t been localized. Anyways here’s an example of the kind of thing I’m talking about. This is the header of last week’s financial statement email I received. We don’t have 401(k)s, I have no idea what an IRA is and I’m not even sure that we have a direct equivalent. In other words, the “tip” is irrelevant.

Wow, you’d think they’d give you tips on RRSPs – Registered Retirement Saving Plans (Canadian equivalent of a 401K) or TFSAs (Roth IRA equivalent, roughly).
It looks like they simply hadn’t considered localization, and they’re just shooting automated email messages tailored for the US financial market.
Skimming over the wikipedia articles, it looks like the rules for US equivalents are different enough that the mint team would have to do more than just find/replace all occurrences of “401(k)” and “IRA,” but that’s not really an excuse.
I don`t even know what 401k is, I had to google it…
